Greg L. Turnquist

Greg L. Turnquist has developed software professionally since 1997. From 2002 to 2010, he was part of the senior software team that worked on Harris' $3.5 billion FAA telco program, architecting mission-critical enterprise apps while managing a software team. He provided after-hours support to a nation-wide telco system and is no stranger to midnight failures and software triages. In 2010, he joined the SpringSource division of VMware, which was spun off into Pivotal in 2013. As a test-bitten script junky, Java geek, and JavaScript Padawan, he is a member of the Spring Data team as well as the mobile-oriented Allspark team. He has made key contributions to Spring Boot and Spring Data REST while also serving as Getting Started Guides, editor-at-large for http://spring.io/. He has migrated Spring Data release train's entire reference docs to Asciidoctor in a week. He has also contributed to multiple Spring portfolio projects. He has worked with Java, Spring, Spring Security, AspectJ, and Jython technologies and has also developed sophisticated scripts for *nix and Windows platforms. As a wiki evangelist, he has also deployed a LAMP-based wiki website that provides fingertip knowledge to users. In 2006, Greg created the Spring Python project. Not enough good content. Not worth the money. Too much content fillers.

The book is only 5 chapters about 230 pages. Now for some books that much content is enough but I don't feel that is the case with this book. It easily can be shortened by 1/4. Why? Well 1/4 of the book are console output prints, code examples, and a few screenshots. I can live with code examples but console outputs...come on.

The book does give you some introduction to spring boot and lets you build a simple application. However, i did not have an AH-HA moment. Everything I read in this book I already read on the spring's website. So, the book is not $45 worth, the most I'd pay for this is $10-$15. Oh well, you live and learn.

You need prior knowledge of the Spring platform to better use.
The author leaves to be desired when addresses some important issues such as integration with Groovy, security or services.
Examples are in style "Hello world" and in some cases not very useful.

Informative but repetitive

This book is suitable for the dire-hard Vincent fan. It is quite a difficult read and repeats so much as to make the book a tad boring. The author asserts a different Vincent than the 'myth' we have been fed, for example that he was not poor yet when Vincent lived in The Hague with Sien and her children, a major problem for them was abject poverty. The author asserts Vincent read and read a lot which is true but the author claims Vincent only used the books to find what he already agreed with and to use it as an argument in his many letters, particularly to Theo. I have many books on and about Vincent. This is not one I would recommend. I find reading Vincents 6 volume Letters the best purchase ever and with that, nothing needs to be added and no thesis needs to be written about. What we do know is Vincent was a difficult man, volatile yet thoughful, zealous, troubled, so tragically lonely ( I would gladly be his lover) and a genius, his mind amazing, a true artist and more.

About the Author
As a professional development coordinator for the Conway, New Hampshire, School District, Penny Kittle acts as a K-12 literacy coach and directs new-teacher mentoring. In addition, she teaches writing at Conway's Kennett High School and in the Summer Literacy Institutes at the University of New Hampshire. Penny is the author and coauthor of numerous books with Heinemann including Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers; Children Want to Write (coauthored with Thomas Newkirk); Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing, which won the 2009 James N. Britton Award from NCTE; The Greatest Catch, and Public Teaching. Penny coauthored two books with Donald H. Graves - Inside Writing and Quick Writes. As an in-demand Heinemann Professional Development Provider Penny delivers PD workshops, webinars, and on-site seminars and consulting services nationwide. Penny Kittle has been named the 2015 Exemplary Leader from the Conference on English Leadership for NCTE. In 2009, Penny received NCTE's prestigious Britton Award for Write Beside Them. An action plan for English classrooms!

High school English teachers, this is what we've been waiting for! Kittle shows us why and how to motivate our teen students to find books they love and, in the process, improve their reading levels - which is something we are not accomplishing with our current, outdated methods. This book has inspired me to be determined: I WILL find a way to fund, stock, and maintain a classroom library that will get kids reading, thinking, and writing. Thank you, Penny Kittle.

Love, love, love this book! This is a great companion text for any Donalyn Miller followers (i.e., "The Book Whisperer," "Reading in the Wild"). It has completely changed how I teach in my HS ELA classroom! I highly recommend this book!
