No Easy Answers: The Truth Behind Death at Columbine High School, by Brooks Brown, Rob Merritt

On April 20, 1999, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, two seniors at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, walked into their school and shot to death twelve students and one teacher, and wounded many others. It was the worst single act of murder at a school in U.S. history. Few people knew Dylan Klebold or Eric Harris better than Brooks Brown. Brown and Klebold were best friends in grade school, and years later, at Columbine, Brown was privy to some of Harris and Klebold's darkest fantasies and most troubling revelations. After the shootings, Brown was even accused by the police of having been in on the massacre—simply because he had been friends with the killers. Now, for the first time, Brown, with journalist Rob Merritt, gets to tell his full version of the story. He describes the warning signs that were missed or ignored, and the evidence that was kept hidden from the public after the murders. He takes on those who say that rock music or video games caused Klebold and Harris to kill their classmates and explores what it might have been that pushed these two young men, from supposedly stable families, to harbor such violent and apocalyptic dreams. Shocking as well as inspirational and insightful, No Easy Answers is an authentic wake-up call for all the psychologists, authorities, parents, and law enforcement personnel who have attempted to understand the murders at Columbine High School. As the title suggests, the book offers no easy answers, but instead presents the unvarnished facts about growing up as an alienated teenager in America today. This edition contains a new afterword that describes what the two authors have experienced and learned about Columbine since the publication of the book.

A view from the perspective of a friend of the killers
By Deeny
A well written account by a young person who was a friend of both Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. He happened to be standing outside the school that day when Harris pulled into the parking lot directly in front of him. When he walked over to speak with Harris, he was told to "just leave" - which he did. He believably claims that he did NOT know what was about to unfold and despite claims to the contrary for some time afterwards by the local sheriff, thankfully he was eventually completely exonerated of having any prior knowledge.

In addition to a straightforward narration of the events of that day, this book squarely spotlights at the dishonesty that existed in the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. In an attempt to cover up their own inadequacy in following up on a report made to police by author Brown's parents regarding Harris' death threats made over a year prior to the shootings, the head of the investigation Sheriff Stone threw anyone and everyone "under the bus" in order to deflect attention from his own office.

Brown chronicles the overt accusations of lying made against him and his parents when they would not back down on their very early public claim of having reported Eric Harris and his death-threat filled website to the proper authorities. This was denied for YEARS until Freedom of Information Act requests along with a court ruling forced the release of the relevant documents that confirmed the Brown's story.

This book was written three years after the event. I read it because I've just read the recently released book written by Dylan Klebold's mother. This book, along with another written by a professional journalist, helps to get more of the entire picture.

I hope Brooks Brown, along with the many other victims are doing well nowadays.

and while it doesn't purport to be the same type of work as Dave Cullen's excellent treatment of the subject
By Weston M. Price
This book is troublesome for a variety of reasons, the main one that I can identify is that as you read it, you realize that in addition to not being an objective account, the book ends up being a treatise and a type of apologia from the author. This is NOT an account of the horrendous tragedy that befell the Columbine community.

Brown laments the environment of bullying, and general teen angst that permeated his life up to that fateful day, but casually includes Harris and Klebold, almost as an afterthought. This book is far from an objective account of the massacre, and while it doesn't purport to be the same type of work as Dave Cullen's excellent treatment of the subject, I expected more than a 'Columbine was a bad environment to live in because of bullying etc'. Further, the author makes sweeping generalizations regarding fairly complex topics such as the effect of media and peer pressure in our society.

Note, the book isn't poorly written. It's grammatically fine and there are no glaring mistakes from the 'nuts and bolts' side of things, however, it simply is a rather juvenile look at the happenings of Columbine and tragically serves only to reduce the incident and the motives behind the obscenity to nothing more than a few simple 'I told you so's'

I can't remember ever being as disappointed, and quite frankly disgusted, in reading in what I thought was going to be a serious treatment by an individual with a unique, 'first hand' perspective.

Really good book if you are interested in reading about Columbine. I read this after reading Dave Cullen's book, and it gave me a whole new perspective on what happened that day. I would recommend it.
